JLG boom lift sizes vary in platform height, horizontal outreach and machine footprint. A model that reaches the right height may still fall short of a recessed work area or be too large for the route into the site.
The charts below compare selected JLG models, then explain which measurements to check before requesting a quotation. They are a shortlist for comparison, not a complete catalogue of every JLG boom lift.
JLG boom lift size chart
| Model | Boom type | Maximum platform height (m) | Maximum horizontal outreach (m) |
|---|---|---|---|
| E450AJ | Electric articulating | 13.72 | 6.83 |
| 600AJ | Engine-powered articulating | 18.47 | 12.12 |
| 800AJ | Engine-powered articulating | 24.38 | 15.80 |
| 860SJ | Engine-powered telescopic | 26.21 | 22.86 |
All dimensions are shown in metres (m), rounded to two decimal places. Maximum height and maximum outreach are separate specifications; they do not mean both are available at the same boom position. Check the reach chart for the machine being offered.
Compare platform height on the same basis
Platform height describes the height of the platform deck. Working height is a different measurement that includes an allowance for an operator's reach. A listing using working height should not be compared directly with another listing using platform height.
The table above uses maximum platform height throughout. When comparing quotations, ask each supplier to identify the measurement used and provide the relevant specification sheet. This makes it easier to spot a difference in terminology before treating it as a difference in machine capability.
Check horizontal reach and the path to the work area
Height alone does not describe how a boom lift will reach its destination. The position where the machine can stand, the distance to the work face and any intervening obstacles all affect the choice.
An articulating boom uses jointed sections to position the platform over and around obstacles. A telescopic boom extends along a straighter path and is often considered when horizontal outreach is a priority.
For example, the reference outreach figures are approximately 15.80 m for the 800AJ and 22.86 m for the 860SJ. Those figures are useful for shortlisting, but the boom's path and permitted working envelope still need to match the job. A longer reach figure does not automatically make a machine the better choice around an obstruction.
Check the machine footprint as well as its reach
The following chart compares overall machine dimensions for these examples:
| Model | Machine width (m) | Machine length (m) | Machine height (m) |
|---|---|---|---|
| E450AJ | 1.75 | 6.45 | 2.01 |
| 600AJ | 2.49 | 8.83 | 2.54 |
| 800AJ | 2.49 | 11.13 | 3.00 |
| 860SJ | 2.49 | 12.19 | 3.05 |
These are approximate overall dimensions for the referenced configurations. Confirm the actual stowed or transport configuration separately, particularly when arranging delivery or checking a restricted entrance.
The E450AJ is narrower than the three engine-powered examples in this chart. The 600AJ, 800AJ and 860SJ share the same listed width, but their lengths and heights differ. A width check alone would therefore miss important access and transport constraints.
Before ordering, record the narrowest entrance, lowest overhead clearance and available turning space along the access route. For transport planning, also request the actual machine weight, loading configuration and any dimensions that change when components are positioned for delivery.
Match the size to the required platform load
A taller boom is not automatically able to carry more people or tools. Compare the required platform load with the rating for the relevant working envelope.
Where a model has restricted and unrestricted capacity ratings, identify which rating applies to the planned position. A headline maximum capacity should not be assumed to apply at every height and outreach. The machine's specification sheet, platform labels and applicable operator manual should agree with the configuration being quoted.
Information to include in your enquiry
To obtain a useful comparison between JLG boom lift sizes, send the supplier:
- Height of the work point above ground, and required platform height if already determined.
- Horizontal distance from the proposed machine position to the work area.
- Dimensions and positions of obstacles between the machine and the work.
- Access-route width, overhead clearance and turning restrictions.
- Expected platform load, including people, tools and materials.
- Indoor or outdoor use, ground conditions and delivery destination.
For a used machine, request its year, serial number and configuration before applying specifications from a current product page. The condition and documentation of the actual unit also matter.
You can compare the models in our JLG articulating boom lift range and JLG telescopic boom lift range. Send these measurements with your enquiry to compare suitable configurations.
